Cruise Ship as MICE Destination and Venue

10/25/2019

Picture
At the recent Asian MICE Cruise Conference held in-conjunction with IT&CMA 2019, the speakers discussed the viability of organising MICE events on a cruise ship. Some of the key benefits highlighted by the speakers at the conference include:
  • All-in-one venue (conference, F&B, team-building, entertainment);
  • All-inclusive package for accommodation, meeting, food, beverage, live performances and activities;
  • Captive audience as delegates will not be distracted by shopping or other attractions as compared to events in a land destination;
  • Savings on land transport time and costs;
  • Less logistic hassle in managing different suppliers;
  • Costs on board is consistent as compared to land event, where costs in one city may vary widely with costs in another city;
  • Overall cost savings of about 30% when MICE event is held on board a ship as compared to an event on land.
However, the “MICE” most cruise operators refer to is incentive groups. The main objective of incentive travel is to create fun for the employees and cultivate loyalty to the company. Hence it is not difficult to see how the wine, dine and entertainment on a cruise would be perfect for incentive groups. But how about more serious meeting, conference and exhibition. How many percent of a cruise ship is really purpose-built for MICE? MICEreview went on-board the Genting Dream Cruise for a six-days-five-nights experience to find out.

The dinner at Praya Palazzo, Bangkok, on 29 Aug 2019 was themed Redefine Memory. This is an apt theme as it brings back memories of this reviewer's first visit to this venue in 2011. New owner, new chef, new and improved tastes. Memory was indeed redefined.

Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin
At the first sight of the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas in Hua Hin, it immediately evokes an air of old-world-charm of the rolling-twenties. No wonder, the hotel, then named the Railway Hotel, was opened in the early 1920s when a new railway line to Malaya was launched at that time.

Marriott Resort, Hua Hin, Thailand

It was pretty dark on the night of this review, but judging from the time taken to walk from hotel lobby to the beachfront, Marriott Resort, Hua Hin, must be occupying a fairly large compound.

The hotel has eight event spaces that can be partitioned and re-configured into even more meeting rooms. The largest meeting space is the Paksa Sawan Ballroom that can accommodate 256 guests in theater-style seating arrangement. There are several smaller rooms ideal for seminars, training sessions and interviews.

Marriott Hotel, Tbilisi, Georgia

The elegant historic building that had its beginnings as Hotel Majestic has been through two world wars, a civil war and functioned as hotel, hospital and trade union house since 1915. In 2002, Tbilisi Marriott Hotel started operations in this reconstructed and restored building. The hotel is certainly for those who loved history, nostalgia and the old world charm. The lobby is a travel back in time, and the lounge retained the “Majestic” name as a reminder to the property’s heritage.

Georgian wine is acknowledged as being one of the earliest, if not the earliest form of wine making in the world. A trip to Georgia would not be complete without visiting Kakheti, Georgia’s stunning wine region, to learn about traditional Georgian wine-making methods and to explore adorable old towns and monasteries.

Lopota Lake Resort & Spa, just three hours drive from Tbilisi, is located in the Kakheti region. It is a great place for relaxation after a day of visiting vineyards and exploring quaint small towns. Judging from the number of outdoor swimming pools and outdoor sports facilities in the Resort, it is most suitably a summer holiday destination.
