Ban Krasae Bon is a community-based tourism project that gives visitors an opportunity to experience an authentic way of life of fruit farmers in Rayong. The afternoon begins at the 400-year-old community shrine. Where water level and weather permits, visitors may help local villagers pick overgrown water mimosa from the Prasae River for composting, or fish for giant river prawns, which will be cooked and served along with other local dishes for a simple yet memorable meal. It is interesting to note that while the project is supported by the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Public Organization), one of Ban Krasae Bon’s main objectives was also to counter efforts to establish a biomass gasification power plant on the banks of Prasae River. This seems a little intriguing when Ban Krasae Bon is promoted alongside mega industrial and infrastructural development of Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor. Sriracha is also home to Vajiravudh Scout Camp, well-known among primary and secondary school students in Chonburi and nearby provinces, especially Bangkok. The camp offers various outdoor activities for young scouts to develop teamwork skills and discipline. Well, a camp is a camp, hence it is pretty much open fields and nature here, the rest is up to your imagination and the camp master’s guidance. It is an excellent venue for team-building activities and campfire dinner. An indoor hall in the camp grounds with built-in stage accommodates about 100 attendees for sit-down buffet dinner. This comes in really handy in case of heavy rain. The Balcony group in Sriracha has its origins as a city hotel catering to the companies in the industrial estates near Sriracha District. As a result of the increase in demand due to the expansion of the industrial estates in the area, the Balcony Seaside was launched as the second branch. This is another fine example of local Thai entrepreneurship rising up to meet demand before the international big boys set foot here.
Just to clear the air, firstly, Balcony Seaside is more a service apartment than a hotel; secondly it is not really situated by the sea. In fact, the sea here is meant for fishing and is not suitable for swimming. Nevertheless, the sea and green views from the apartments provide a relaxing feel. The Balcony Seaside has 234 units of studio apartment, one-bedroom and two-Bedroom suites, complete with kitchen and cooking utensils. Perhaps an area requiring improvement would be sound proofing the apartments, as there were some reports of noise from next door units, corridor and engine rooms. Function rooms in this hotel come in a variety of sizes, accommodating 25 to maximum 130 people. Balcony Seaside is suitable for small to medium corporate meetings in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) promotes astronomy education for all, especially children and young people, partly by offering the opportunity to observe celestial phenomena via telescope or in a planetarium.
MICE organisers looking for venues within Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) can rent the Observatory’s spaces, even if the facilities are more educational rather than tourism in nature. For example, the open amphitheater can be turned into a spectacular ‘star-gazing’ theme dinner, complete with astronomy tour and shows... weather permitting. For CSR and team-building activity, MICE visitors can participate in a project to help create tactile star maps using clay, which allow those with visual impairment to feel the shapes and positions of stars in the sky. These learning materials created are donated to the Chachoengsao Panyanukul School under the patronage of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Situated on New Petchaburi Road, Lancaster Bangkok is a five-star luxury hotel, owned and managed by a Thai family. The family’s experience in the hospitality business dates back to 1967 when they first launched the Siam Hotel on this same location. In the 1980s, they opened the Landmark Hotel and Plaza on Sukhumvit Road. The family expanded its business to London when it acquired the Royal Lancaster Hotel and another hotel property in the 1990s. The original Siam Hotel was demolished in 2007, and in its place is the new Lancaster Bangkok.
Although rather inconspicuous from the outside, Lancaster Bangkok's atrium lobby is grand and its guests rooms offers luxurious space starting with 40 to 72 sqm. For business meeting and conference, there are nine fully customisable meeting rooms and the Siam Ballroom, accommodating 10 to 300 guests. Given Bangkok's traffic condition, it is good to note that the hotel is just a short distance from the Airport Rail Link’s Makkasan Station, and the Asok BTS Station and the Phetchaburi MRT Station. Singapore, as a MICE destination, scores high on accessibility, security, ease of communication, hotel and meeting facilities and IT.
Below is an overview of Singapore's MICE industry in Chinese, written by MICEreview's Editor, commissioned by EventPlatform magazine of Taiwan. Bosnia & Herzegovina is a country situated in the western Balkan peninsular of Europe. Its storied history and its recent war with neighbouring Serbia make it rather difficult to explain this country in a few sentence. Today as you interact with the people in Bosnia, you can still feel their angst and emotion on the war that happened just about 20 years ago, as almost everyone, every family has a story to tell.
But perhaps it is these history, stories and emotions, as well as the natural beauty of the country that make Bosnia & Herzegovina a great place to visit, from the MICE point of view. For example, the experience of the recent war has given rise to interesting themed tours and activities such as the "Siege Tour", "Tunnel Tour". While a walk through the main street capital city Sarajevo's Old Town is like a walk through history from the Ottoman era, Austro-Hungarian period, the Communist regime to today. Unlike old towns of other European countries, the architectures of each era were well preserved on one street - like a linear timeline, making easier to explain the history of the country. Then there are other heritage sites such as Mostar, Pocitelj and nature sites with spectacular views such as the Kravice waterfall. And dining right beside gushing waters along the Buna River is an experience not to be missed. Bosnia & Herzegovina is a truly an amazing destination with great potential for MICE, although more investment and development in infrastructure, as well as improvement on assessibility would be ideal. The Serbs may still have historical and political issues to resolve with some of its neighbours, but great nature, rich heritage and war stories make Serbia an interesting destination for tourism and MICE.
In the capital city of Belgrade, the Belgrade Fortress in the Kalemegdan Park commands an impressive view overlooking the confluence of Danube and Sava rivers., It is a symbol of Belgrade since centuries ago and it has been built, re-built and expanded over the years and hence its architecture is an embodiment of Roman, Byzantine, Serbian, Hungarian and Ottoman styles. Underground cellars and halls within the fortress are indeed unique venues for conference, exhibition and dinner functions. However, in an effort to preserve the structure and archaeological artefacts, only certain events are allowed to be held here. MICE organisers should check with the local DMCs or convention bureau for availability and eligibility. MICE organisers looking for more secluded venues for 'secret' corporate retreat may want to consider the Kustendorf Timber Town. The Timber Town is located on a hill in Mokra Gora, some 200km away from Belgrade. It was built by film director Emir Kusturica for his movie “Life is a miracle” and now serves as a resort. There are restaurants, a hotel, indoor and outdoor theatres, a swimming pool, tennis courts and gym facilities, in addition to nature walks with breathtaking view of the mountainous region. This makes the Timber Town a great venue for company retreats where conference, team-building and social activities can all be held in one place. The hotel has 76 rooms, 3 suites and 3 houses for accommodation, and the multipurpose hall has a capacity of 250 in theatre style seating. Dubrovnik in Croatia, already a popular European beach destination, has now been made more famous thanks to Hollywood movies and TV series such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Robin Hood (starring Jamie Foxx), and Game of Thrones etc. It is great location for incentive travel given its rich history and scenery. There are many open spaces, indoor halls and restaurants housed in heritage sites suitable for holding special theme dinners and events. Some of these include the Pucic Palace Hotel, Photo Fish Restaurant, Klarisa Restaurant, East West Benji Beach Bar, the Old Quarantine, the Old Customs Building, Townhall MKD Theatre, the Rector's Palace, the Franciscan Monastery, as well as concert and party venue - Revelin.
The Old Town in Kotor, Montenegro, is like a miniature of the Dubrovnik old city. Size of the town and its buildings seem to be in smaller scale. However, the mountain range, and its closeness to the city, is imposing. Incentive groups can probably take a challenge to climb the fort wall from the old town to the mountain top as a team building activity.
But old town and fortress is not all that Montenegro can offer. There are new developments along the coasts. In Tivet, luxury apartments and hotels are springing up. Luxury hotel, such as the Regent Hotel featured here, is all set to take on MICE groups with its fine ballroom and function facilities. |
